DIY Zinc Sunscreen Recipe
Yay! It’s the first week of summer vacation for me here in South Florida and the heat is literally on! It’s been so hot and humid here a trip to the beach or pool is almost always a daily necessity!
Now you all know from reading my post on Why Use Sunscreen…or Why Not To that I am not a big fan of using a daily sunscreen. However, when you’re going to be in the sun for longer periods, such as when you go to the beach or pool, you most definitely need to apply a safe zinc sunscreen to protect your skin from UVA rays.
I am still on the search for an effective natural sunscreen. Thanks to all my fabulous Facebook fans for giving me lots of suggestions…I’m just having a hard time deciding which one to try!
Until then, it occurred to me…why not release the DIY goddess within and make my own? Is it even possible to make your own sunscreen? Heck yeah it is and it’s easier than you think!
I was recently at my incredibly gifted organic hairdresser’s salon and she told me a tip on how she makes her own sunscreen. She just buys a tube of zinc oxide (non-nano, hopefully) and adds it to her moisturizer. I wonder how this works…perhaps the moisturizer takes away the whitening of the zinc? I haven’t tried it yet, but I will report back on the results.
For another sunscreen recipe, I turned to the fabulous Sophie Uliano of Gorgeously Green. For those of you who don’t know her, she is the queen of DIY green fabulousness who wrote a book called Do It Gorgeously.
Sunscreen seems like a complicated blend, but she makes it easy with only a few basic ingredients you probably already have in the house (with the exception of zinc oxide powder, which you’ll probably have to order.)
See the video below for her step by step instructions. For those of you who like it written out, look below the video for the complete directions.
If you decide to try this recipe, leave me a comment and tell me how it went and how it performed for you!
I gotta admit, with just starting summer break and already attending a teacher training workshop, I haven’t had time to make this yet. This time I’m going to use you guys as my guinea pigs! Hee hee!
DIY Sesame Sunscreen
2 Tbsp Virgin Coconut Oil
1 Tbsp Shea Butter
1/2 tsp Sesame Oil
1/2 tsp Aloe Vera Gel
Heat gently in a double boiler (or in a glass bowl inside of a pot filled with water)
Add 2 tsp zinc oxide powder (gives it the spf) and stir
Pour into a 2oz dark glass jar (oils are light sensitive so be sure to use dark colored glass)
Sunscreen will liquify in hot weather. Keep in fridge to make it solid. Will keep for 2 months.
Don’t forget to leave a comment after you make this fab zinc sunscreen, share this post with friends and tweet it too!
