Maxim Nontoxic Sanitary Pads Review and Giveaway

Our periods. It’s not something we like to talk about…if I even mention anything about the “P” word to my boyfriend, he covers his ears and starts singing. But we really do need to start talking about it! Maybe not about the intricacies, but about the things we use for our periods. Are they safe? Or can they do us harm? I am speaking of….the pad and the tampon.

For years, I used pads and eventually tampons without thought. When I started going organic, I thought about the safety of the sanitary products I was using.

Most conventional pads and tampons are pristine white. Do you think they started that way? Absolutely not…the products are bleached with chlorine and the resulting byproduct of chlorine is dioxin. Dioxin is a toxic chemical linked with endometrioisis, ovarian cancer, and hormone dysfunction to name a few. The producers claim the amount of dioxin in a tampon or pad is insignificant. But dioxin can accumulate in fat stores.

How many pads or tampons does a woman use in her lifetime?

At least 15,000.

Do you want this toxin collecting in your body?

Most sanitary products are also made from synthetic cotton, which may be genetically modified, wood fluff pulp, and rayon, another synthetic material used for it’s absorbent power. Rayon also contains dioxin. In addition, the cotton is laced with pesticides. And we are putting these things in an extremely delicate area.

Ever purchased the lightly scented pads? Well the fragrance is synthetic and can lead to irritation, allergies, and hormone dysfunction. I hate the scent of synthetic fragrance and find it appaling in a pad!

There are other, safer options available for women.

Maxim is a natural feminine hygiene company which makes tampons, sanitary pads, panty liners, maternity pads, and other organic cotton products. When I discovered Maxim, I knew I’d found a winner.

Here are some of the distinguishing features of Maxim Hygiene Products:

  • Made of certified organic and natural cotton- for ultimate softness

  • Chlorine and dioxin free

  • Synthetic free

  • Wood fluff pulp free

  • Hypoallergenic and Irritation free

  • Eco-friendly

We never really think of the environmental impact of our sanitary products. The ones made of wood fluff pulp and synthetics are not biodegradable. This is one thing I really like about Maxim’s products- they are made of renewable cotton, with less of an environmental impact and are completely biodegradable. Whoever thought you could help save the world with your pads?

I was able to try a variety of products from Maxim:

Classic Contour Pads Regular Unscented- Excellent pad for daily use

Ultra Thin Winged Pads Daytime Unscented- Great choice if you prefer a thinner pad, it’s comparable (and much healthier than) Always or Stayfree

Ultra Thin Winged Pads Overnight Unscented- Perfect size and length for night use

Ultra Thin Contour Pantiliners- Great for the light days

Organic Cardboard Applicator Tampons- I don’t usually use tampons, but I wanted to see how these felt. They’ve very comfortable but gave me some challenges when putting them on…probably because I’m not used to using tampons and there was no plastic applicator.

Okay, this is one giveaway I’d really kind of like to win. I have a hard time believing something natural could handle the Mississippi-esque “Flows” that run in my family. . .

Re: Natural Beauty Topic–mascara maybe? I got a more “natural” brand but I think it’s making my eyelashes fall out. (!) So I would really appreciate the low-down on what to look for or avoid in mascaras, or a comparison of some products out there!

I’d love to see more women’s health and naturals woven into your blog! I recently switched to using organic, chlorine-free tampons and though you may not see a difference from an everyday use perspective, I like knowing that I’m not polluting one of the most personal places in my body with pesticides/chemicals. Rock on, Robin! xo

I’m confused by some of the terminology in this blog – because it says that Maxim products are ‘Made of certified organic and natural cotton’.

Does this mean that some of the cotton in Maxim products isn’t organic?

  • tiffany newman

This is something I haven’t thought about yet. But it’s important changing need to make too.

  • Natural Organics

    Hi J-

Sorry for the confusion. According to Maxim’s website:

Made with 100% Certified Organic and Natural Cotton – A more naturally breathable fiber that is better for your Body, Earth and Health.

I take it to mean that it’s made with a combination of certified organic and natural cotton which is chemical, pesticide and GM free.

  • J

Thanks Robin, but I’m not convinced at all.
If it is distinguishing between organic and natural cotton then the ‘natural’ part means non-organic. Which means it is sprayed with pesticides and may even be GM.
It is quite dishonest and I don’t like being tricked by companies and mis-sold a product.

I’m keen to find a 100% organic tampon so I’ll keep looking. The concept is very good as it’s just one change in routine that has many positive effects. Thanks for sharing the info x
