The Dark Side of Foundation

Does your foundation contain toxic ingredients?

Many women use liquid foundation to even out the skin, cover slight imperfections and give a smooth overall appearance. I like to use foundation sometimes but for me it’s not an everyday thing.

Some days I go without, letting my natural skin shine through. But a lot of women like to use it more often, letting the skin absorb the ingredients on a daily basis. What is going directly into your bloodstream? Toxins!

Check out the ingredients and you will shudder. It may list propylene glycol, lanolin, formaldehyde, mineral oil, or cocoamide DEA to name a few. All of these are petrochemicals which serve a purpose in the foundation’s formula.

But the scariest thought of all is what they do to your body.

These synthetics can cause allergies, eye irritation, pimples and worst of all, cancer.

When products containing these harmful irritants are put on the skin, they block pores and don’t let the skin breathe. But don’t worry, you don’t have to give up wearing foundation. There are safer alternatives.

Some of my favorite nontoxic foundations:

Real Purity (Save $5 off your first order by signing up for their newsletter & free shipping over $25!)

La Bella Donna Compressed Minerals (my current favorite- very light and great coverage! Click on the picture for more info.)

I’m still looking for other effective natural foundations and have heard great things about Vapour Organic Beauty but have yet to try it…leave a comment if you have recommendations!

Update: Since this post was published, I’ve been able to try Vapour and I am impressed! It’s ideal for dry skin types since it contains many nutritious oils (sometimes I’ve found it a bit too oily- so I wouldn’t recommend for very oily skin, but it’s a treat for dry skin types.) Thank you, Debbie! You rock! I was even thinking that maybe some time in the future you can write me a guest blog post on healthy hair tips, if you’re interested! My readers would love to see that especially coming from an amazing hairstylist like you!

Here’s my big dilemma: For years I have tried and tried many different foundations to find one that actually matches my skin. For some reason, I seem to have a unique tone (white girl with yellow undertones? yep… weird) and foundations usually are way too pale or look orange/pink on me (most pale skin colors have pink or peach undertones). I finally found one that covers and matches perfectly a couple years ago, and it’s Estee Lauder. Maybelline also has one that is a very close match and I use that one when I run out or can’t afford a new bottle of EL. I loathe to give up these products because of my former problems with finding a match. I’m willing to trade out ALL my other products, but foundation is one I’ll probably keep using….. hopefully if that’s the only product I use with chemicals, the long term effects won’t be too bad! I don’t wear it every day either!
