Holistic dentistry is gaining in popularity as an alternative to traditional products. While regular dental checkups and maintenance are supremely important to your health, you do have some natural options for dental care.
You may have heard some controversy surrounding fluoride. The American Dental Association continues to endorse fluoridation of community water supplies as safe and effective for preventing tooth decay. However, many practitioners believe that fluoride is toxic and does not decrease tooth decay.
Whatever your position, if you’ve made the choice to eliminate fluoride, you can still protect your teeth. Fluoride-free natural toothpaste is sold at natural food stores and is increasingly available at many major chains. You can also make your own toothpaste by mixing baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Make sure that you do not swallow this mixture. Dry brushing is another option to clean your teeth.
DIY Mouthwash & Breath Freshener Recipes
After a lifetime of brushing, you’ve probably become accustomed to the taste of minty toothpaste. If so, you can mix 1/2 cup baking soda with 1 teaspoon of sea salt and add a few drops of wintergreen or peppermint oil. Mix the solution and store it in a sealed container for up to three weeks.
To freshen your breath, consider chewing on parsley, mint leaves or anise seeds. You can also mix clove oil and olive oil to naturally freshen your breath. If you’re looking to create a mouthwash, here’s one recipe. Mix one teaspoon each of rosemary, peppermint and lavender. Mix the herbs well and then place one teaspoon of the mixture in a cup of boiling water. Steep for 15 minutes and then strain. Cool and use as a mouthwash.
Green tea has been used for years as an alternative to typical mouthwashes. The tea’s natural antioxidants create an effective oral rinse that’s completely safe and all natural.
Remove Tartar the Natural Way
Concerned about removing tartar? Take lemon rind and rub your teeth and gums. Your diet can also help maintain your oral hygiene. Cheese contains natural cavity-fighting agents, as well as vitamins to strength the teeth and enamel. Also, don’t forget the produce aisle! Crunchy vegetables, like cauliflower and broccoli, can help clean gums.
Natural Teeth Whitening
Is it time to brighten your smile? Strawberries are a natural bleaching agent. They can remove surface stains and clear away plaque. A crunchy apple can also act like a toothbrush as you chew it. Apples can help remove excess food and bacteria.
For a whitening home remedy, try mixing a little bit of baking soda with lemon. The paste will bubble slightly. Wipe your teeth clean before you apply the mixture for a minute. Gently brush it off with a toothbrush.
