Do you buy natural lipstick? Are you concerned with gluten in your lipstick?

Back in the day I sure wasn’t! I used to rock my Cover Girl Lip Slicks. Remember those? They came in these long tubes in great sheer colors. Little did I know what I was exposing myself to back then! Lead, mineral oil and other toxins!

When I went organic in my cosmetics, I switched to natural lipstick but it never occurred to me that my lipstick might contain gluten.

A few years back, I was tested and discovered I was gluten sensitive. Gluten is a protein found in grains which when ingested can cause havoc to the body both internally and externally. Wheat germ oil or gluten based Vitamin E is sometimes added to cosmetics to give it more moisture.

The debate is still out whether gluten in cosmetic products like lotion, shampoos actually affect the body internally. I am of the class that thinks, yes it does, so I avoid it in my products.

Did you know there’s gluten in some lipstick brands? Even natural ones? This is especially concurring, since we actually eat our lipstick. We eat and drink with it and it ends up part of our meal.

That’s a bit gross when you think of it, but it’s the truth. So for us gluten sensitive or Celiac afflicted gals, we need to be even more careful with the lip products we choose.

That’s why I was ecstatic to find gluten free Red Apple Lipstick. It’s lab tested 100% gluten free lip products with all natural ingredients. Some lip products claim they’re gluten free without any lab testing to back it up. Not so for RAL.

Their lip products are also tested to be free of parabens, toxins, and soy and are enriched with a gluten free source of Vitamin E.

Here are some more of the things I love about RAL:

Made in the USA

Made by a small (indie) company

Beautiful, vibrant colors

More than just lips- they also make lovely mineral eye tints

Nourishing & high quality ingredients

Here’s my take on the lip gloss:

I tried RAL gloss in Pink Martini. I love pink lip glosses and now I can truly say this is my favorite lip gloss ever. It’s super shiny with sparkles. It makes your lip shine like a diamond! I love how RAL lists their ingredients online…they have nothing to hide! Here’s the ingredients for this lip gloss:

Palma Christi Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Aloe Barbadensis, Roman Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Extract, Citrus Grandis (Grapeseed) Extract, Hypericum Perforatum (St John’s Wort) Extract, May Contain: Red #7 Lake, Red #6, Red #27, Mica, Iron Oxides

And the lipstick:

I’m not a huge fan of lipsticks as they can be drying…not RAL! After agonizing about which color to go with, I selected Summer Sands…it’s beautiful! It’s the most moisturizing lipstick I’ve ever used and the color is to die for. It’s a sparkly nude shade. It’s the perfect addition to a natural makeup look. Ingredients are:

Ricinus Communis, Octyl palmitate, Ozokerite, Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Cera Alba (Bees) Wax, Olive (Olea Europea) Oil, Theobroma Grandiflorum (Cupuacu) Seed Butter, Tocopheryl Acetate from an all natural non gluten source, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Aloe Barbadensis leaf Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, may contain Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Iron Oxides

If you’re not concerned with gluten in your lipstick, this is still an amazing brand for you to check out. I am very impressed with the quality, the shades, and the staying power.

They even have an awesome discount program where you can trade in your half empty toxic lipstick and get RAL at a reduced price!

Red Apple Lipstick has generously offered a full sized product to one of my lucky readers! You can choose any of their products, including lipstick, lip gloss, lip balm, lip pencils, or eye shadows. Isn’t that awesome?

All you need to do is follow the instructions on the Rafflecopter widget below. I’ve made the entries simple. I hate it when I go on a blog and I have to do 20 things to enter a contest. I know you probably do too.

Welcome to the first in what I hope to be a series of natural perfume reviews!

My mom’s birthday was May 4 and Mother’s Day always followed, so I used to tease her that she got me for two gifts. But I really loved getting my mom gifts. My usual gifts for her was jewelry. She had about every piece of jewelry you could think of with “#1 Mom” on it. She always loved what I got her!

Occasionally, I would stray from my normal routine and get her perfume. I remember one of her favorites was Chantilly. Remember that one?

When I think back to the perfumes I got her, I shudder now that I know how toxic conventional perfumes are. They’re loaded with synthetic ingredients which are only tested for their skin effects. Respiratory, neurological, or systemic effects are never tested. This is the industry norm.

Phthalates are the chemicals that give perfumes their fragrance. Phthalates are a known environmental toxin and suspected hormone disruptor. The scary thing about phthalates is they don’t need to be listed on the label and are considered a trade secret.

The best bet for perfumes is to choose a natural or organic variety, which used plant essences and essential oils. Why not help Mom get healthier by giving her nontoxic perfume instead of the toxic alternative? And now on to the perfume reviews!

Pure Natural Diva Botanicals are a new 100% Natural Perfume that would be the perfect gift for Mom. They come in 4 scents: Pure, Natural, Diva, and Elixir. Here’s a quick synopsis of each scent:

Pure is sensually uplifting, like sunny day in a mixed field of lemongrass and Lavender. Notes include uplifting cassie, soothing chamomile, lemon, lime and an Egyptian neroli.

Natural is fresh and inviting: Imagine a picnic in a rose-bordered citrus grove. Notes include a hint of clary sage, exalting pink grapefruit, Moroccan rose, and soothing ylang ylang.

Diva is full of soul—sultry and mysterious. Notes include natural musk derived from Ambrette, sinfully smooth New Caledonian Sandalwood, blended together in a lusciously robust Vanilla.

Elixir wakens the senses, like a lingering morning with an ocean view. Notes include aphrodisiacal vanilla, a hint of oakmoss, exquisite osmanthus, married with rejuvenating pink grapefruit and red mandarin.

I recently had the chance to test out all four scents and my favorite hands down was Elixir. It’s got subtle hints of vanilla, but not too much vanilla if you know what I mean. It’s just right!

What I like about all the scents (beside the fact that they are 100% natural) is that they’re not strong. When someone’s wearing a strong perfume and they walk by, it slaps you in the face. PND organic perfumes are subtle. I think perfumes are supposed to be worn to please yourself, not so others can smell you.

If vanilla isn’t your mom’s cup of tea, I’m sure one of the other three scents would be up her alley.

You can become a Diva VIP to get free shipping on all orders over $50 and get the latest news on new products and deals!

Speaking of deals, just in time for Mother’s day, PND Botanicals has a wonderful sale for you: You can choose between two gift sets. It’s really perfect- the gift recipient will get a gift wrapped sample set – so Mom can experience all of the wonderful scents along with a gift certificate for a full size bottle they can select for themselves.

I received one of these sets and it was really a wonderful way for me to determine which one I liked best. I plan on getting a full sized bottle of Elixir!

Since Mother’s Day is fast approaching, I urge you to stay away giving toxic perfumes as gifts and instead opt for scents from nature with Pure Natural Diva Botanical Organic Perfume. I hope these perfume reviews were helpful in selecting the perfect gift for mom!

Stay natural…stay beautiful…go green!

Hello, beauties! It’s guest post time!

I have a wonderful post for you on Gluten Free DIY Beauty recipes by Sabrina Taylor of BESskincare.com. They’re actually perfect for the gluten sensitive as well as everybody else. Read below for three awesome recipes to add to your DIY repertoire.

What are your favorite g-f beauty recipes?

DIY G-Free Skincare

by Sabrina Taylor

Gluten can be a sneaky ingredient in many of your favourite skin care products. For those of us with allergies, the consequences can be painful and more importantly, dangerous.

For those who don’t know much about gluten and Celiac disease, let me give you the 411.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and most oats. All of these items are commonly found in your favorite foods, drinks and even beauty products.

If you are diagnosed with Celiac disease or have a severe intolerance, it means that your body is rejecting the protein. Gluten rejection causes your body to attack the villi in your small intestines. Nutrient absorption is stunted when this happens, so basically when a Celiac has gluten they are hurting the very thing that is meant to nourish them. Removing gluten from your life repairs villi damage over time.

Gluten removal involves more than just eliminating it from your diet.

It means removing it from your skin care products too.

One of the best ways to ensure g-free products is to make them yourselves, so here are my favourite recipes.

Moisturizer

You will need the following items:

- 1 cup Shea Butter

- ½ cup 100% Virgin Coconut Oil

- ½ cup Almond Oil

- 1 ½ tablespoons Beeswax

- 1 tablespoon Zinc Oxide

- 1 tablespoon Glycerin

- 10 drops of your favourite Essential Oil

Melt your butter, oils and beeswax in a pot over low heat. Once it’s all melted, remove from the heat and let cool.

Add zinc oxide and glycerin in a blender then one spoonful at a time add your cooled mixture. Blend on high for a few minutes or until desired consistency is achieved.

This moisturizer is rich and creamy and even protects your skin from UVA rays.

Facial Cleanser

Gather together:

- 1 cup Coconut Oil

- ¼ cup Grapeseed Oil

- 1 cup Raw Sugar

Blend your oils together then slowly add in your sugar and stir it all together.

The sugar is a great natural exfoliant and the oils help rid your skin of dirt and makeup. If you double the recipe it makes for a great body scrub as well!

Toner

Simple to make, all you will need is:

- ¼ cup Witch Hazel

- ¼ cup Aloe Juice

- 2 tablespoons Chamomile Essential Oil

- 2 tablespoons Distilled Water

- 5-6 Fresh Mint Leaves

Mix all of your ingredients together then use a muddler to crush the natural oils from the mint. Pour into a spray bottle and mist when necessary.

Chamomile and aloe are soothing for dry, inflamed skin, but also hydrate. Mint is stimulating for your senses and acts as an antipruritic. It’s a great g-free facial product for on the go.

All of these recipes are gluten free and perfect for Celiacs. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Welcome to Spring Break Product Review Week! This is Day 4…are you ready to have your mind blown??

Ok, you’re not going to have your mind blown, but you are going to learn about my latest favorite all natural skin cleanser…

Living in South Florida, I’ve always loved citrus. In fact, before the ole canker hit (and my trees had to be cut down , we had an orange and a grapefruit tree in the backyard. I remember picking the fruit off my tree and juicing it the old fashioned way. Just by squeezing it! That was the best juice I ever had. I miss my tree….

This brings us to today’s review…

Brittanie’s Thyme Facial Freedom Organic Citrus Facial Cleanser….that’s a mouthful!

I discovered this cleaner one day while searching the pages of Abe’s Market. I’ve found that on Abe’s you can find amazing brands you’ve never heard of!

I was looking for a good facial cleanser that wouldn’t dry my face out and had natural, gluten-free ingredients. I found it!!

This cleanser is not like your ordinary cleanser. First off, it’s USDA certified organic (always a good thing!) It contains peppermint and orange oil to help cleanse your skin and jojoba oil to soften it. When I use this cleanser, my face feels SO soft afterwards.

I use it in the shower and sometimes it drips into my mouth a bit and it actually tastes sweet! I don’t swallow it though as it has a warning on it that it may cause stomach upset if swallowed…I wonder if that disclaimer is on there for me?

Here are a few of Facial Freedom’s features:

No Artificial Ingredients

Gluten Free

Fragrance Free

Made By Hand

BPA Free (comes in a glass bottle)

Woman-Owned Business (LOVE to support my females!)

Check out the lovely selection of Brittanie’s Thyme skincare on Abe’s Market.

Check out the safe & natural ingredients:

Ingredients: *Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, *Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Bark/Leaf/Twig Extract, *Simmondia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, *Vegetable Glycerin, Leuconostoc (Radish) Ferment Filtrate, *Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Cyamopsis Tetragonoloba (Guar) Gum, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Oil, *Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil

*USDA Certified Organic (fabuloso!)

Brittanie’s Thyme makes other facial and skin care products as well- I really want to try the Facial Freedom Moisturizer and Almond Oatmeal Scrub!

It’s also very competitively priced and goes on sale occasionally at Abe’s Market.

I adore this cleanser, the fact that it’s certified organic and contains lovely ingredients and I think you will too.

Check out their YouTube video…which I kinda don’t get….but maybe you will! It’s short (only a bit over a minute!)

Stay natural…stay beautiful…go green!

P.S. If you choose to buy this product through my link, please be advised, I will be credited for the sale (and even possibly credited for your soft, moisturized skin as well.) Just go to Abe’s Market and search for Brittanie’s Thyme and all the beautiful products will pop right up.

Welcome to Day 2 of Spring Break Product Review Week! Since I am off this week, I decided to do this because I’ve been finding THE best products and I want to share them with you (and I actually have TIME-whoopie!)

Since I went organic, I’ve had challenges finding a good natural perfume. I tend to not like the overlly floral scents…I adore fresh, citrus scents however. I did review a line of perfectly natural fragrances here, if you want to check it out: Golden Earth Perfume

But today I am reviewing my absolute favorite perfume (so far.) Introducing…..

Essence of Vali…if that name sounds familiar, it’s because their sleep blend was recently featured in Goodebox. I fell in love with that so upon further exploration, decided to order the perfume.

This sweet smelling concoction comes in a 2 ounce bottle or a handy purse sized roller ball…I elected for the roller ball version. Those tend to last a while!

This 100% natural (and vegan) fragrance smells like summer in Tuscany…I’ve never been to Tuscany but this is what I imagine it would smell like.

It’s hard to explain- it’s sweet, yet tangy. On their site, they describe it as,

“Warm floral, slightly citrus, earthy and sensual and uplifting at the same time.”

It’s a blend of the following essential oils: lavender, cedarwood, rosewood, patchouli, palmarosa, geranium, litsea cubeba & clove. I don’t know how they did it, but it’s the perfect blend and the most beautiful, refreshing scent.

Not only does it smell nice on you (and to others who might otherwise think you’re stinky) but it also has aromatherapy benefits, such as relaxation and rejuvenation.

EOV actually won an award for Best Natural Product at the Extracts show in NYC in 2004.

If you’re looking for the perfect perfume for everyday wear or even one for that special night out, you’ve found it in Essence of Vali.

I adore this line and I adore this perfume!

Check out my video review here on YouTube: Product Review: Essence of Vali Perfume OR

watch it right here!

Have you discovered Essence of Vali yet?

What do you like about this perfume?

Stay natural…stay beautiful…go green!

P.S. If you decide to get some EOV for yourself and buy it through my link, I’ll get a small contribution to my Toxic Beauty fund, which helps me keep this blog afloat! If you want to check it out, go to Abe’s Market and search: Essence of Vali. Gracias!

I am on vacay this week! And I mean serious vacay- I already have my spa day planned for tomorrow! I wrote about my first spa day here: One Day in Maui. I’m getting a berry sugar scrub, get to do the wonderful Hana experience again (if you don’t know what this is, read my old post!) and get a Maui pedicure…I wonder if they’ll rub pineapples all over my feet?

Since I am on Spring Break, I decided to do something a bit different here on Toxic Beauty Blog. I want to make this the week of Spring product reviews! So each day I’ll post a new review of a product I’ve discovered that I think would be a great addition to your Spring beauty kit.

I’ve been finding some great ones lately but haven’t really had time to post about them. Last year I finally relented and subscribed to not one, but two natural beauty boxes. These beauty boxes are a relatively inexpensive way to try out new products before you spend a lot of money on them. Eventually I cancelled one because the small bottles of “stuff” were growing too large for my tiny cabinet! The one I decided to keep was Goodebox.

If you’re wondering which one to subscribe to, look no further. I can’t say I’ve loved every single product I’ve received, but I can say their customer service and quality is tops! A few months ago, I received some shampoo and conditioners that I couldn’t use because they contained wheat. The folks at Goodebox were kind enough to send me two replacement products. How amazing is that?? I ended giving the wheat laced samples to my friend. Through Goodebox is how I discovered Pacifica. And that, my friends, is called a great segway to today’s review!

Pacifica Color Quench Jumbo Lip Tint

I usually love just about everything that’s jumbo…popcorn, an elephant, and now a lip tint!

[By the way, Pacifica is a great natural beauty brand who specialize in natural fragrances and now carries really awesome cosmetics.]

First off, I love lip tints because I am not a fan of dark lipsticks…I am the kinda gal who likes just a hint of color and shine on my lips.

The Pacifica tint I received in my Goodebox was the color I’d have picked for myself. It’s called “Coconut Nectar” and is described as a “creamy, golden raisin.” I’d describe it more like a sparkly nude. I am a HUGE fan of nude lip colors. I adore the natural look, especially if you go for dramatic eyes. This color is gorgeous! Check out the pic below. A camera can’t do this justice!

Yup, those are my lips wearing Pacifica Lip Tint in Coconut Nectar.

If the nude look isn’t your thing, they also come in four other shades with yummy sounding names like Blood Orange and Vanilla Hibiscus.

If you’re thinking about ingredients, you’re going to want to know that the tints contain only the most natural and lip soothing components such as avocado and coconut oil. By the way, it also gets rave reviews on Pacifica’s site, where young ladies such as myself can post their thoughts.

They also have a great smell to them if you’re out of perfume (natural, of course) and want to rub a bit on your wrists…(kidding!)

A few more features: 100% vegan and completely recyclable or reusable if you want to try your hand at lip balm making.

Overall, if you’re the type of person who likes a subtle hint of color in a remarkably moisturizing formula with 100% natural ingredients, Pacifica’s Color Quench Lip Tints may be for you!

Now it’s your turn!

Have you tried these tubes of joy yet?

If not, what are you waiting for? Browse the selection at Pacifica.

Stay natural…stay beautiful…go green!

P.S. I recently was thrilled to become an affiliate of Pacifica! So if you decide to purchase the lip tint and any other products, you will be generously contributing a small amount to the Toxic Beauty Blog fund, which helps me keep this blog afloat.

I’m a huge fan of body scrubs! I just love the thought of being able to rub a lovely smelling exfoliator on my skin to reveal the smooth, new skin beneath. Do you like salt or sugar scrubs best? Personally, I love a good sugar scrub because I love my sweets! Other times, I prefer salt for it’s detoxifying abilities. If you are more of a savory person, check out my salt scrub recipe here: homemade exfoliator.

Today I want to share this simple sugar scrub recipe that will make you want to lick your lips!

As a matter of fact, you can use it as a lip scrub too!

All you need are some simple ingredients you probably already have in your fridge or pantry.

Gather together:

1 cup organic brown sugar

1 tablespoon cinnamon powder

1/2 cup virgin, unrefined organic coconut oil

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Glass jar with lid (use any empty glass jar you may have or use a Ball jar)

Mixing bowl

Spoon

You might be asking…what is the best kind of cinnamon powder to use? An organic cinnamon powder will work but if you want to go for the best, get Kojinte cinnamon.

Why use cinnamon is this body scrub?

If you didn’t already know, this flavorful spice has incredible benefits for the body, both inside and out. Here’s just a few:

brings blood to the surface of the skin (plumps the skin)

plumps lips

relief from eczema when combined with honey

can treat acne

can be applied to fine lines

This is why I chose to use cinnamon in the scrub…not to mention the fact that it will make it smell delicious!

Coconut is the oil of choice because of it’s many skin benefits as well, including:

incredibly moisturizing for dry skin

heals skin rashes like eczema and acne

anti-aging

treats stretch marks

anti-viral and anti-bacterial

Directions (only 3 steps!):

I like to mix everything in a mixing bowl first, to completely integrate all the ingredients.

1. First measure the brown sugar into the bowl.

2. Add the coconut oil and stir until thoroughly combined.

3. Add the vanilla extract and cinnamon and mix well.

Close jar tightly until you use it and store in a cool dry place. I know that once when I forgot to put my scrub away, it attracted ants in the shower!

Be sure to use the scrub rather quickly (within 2 weeks) as homemade skincare usually has the tendency to go bad sooner.

If you make this delectable scrub, leave me a comment and let me know how it went!

If you’re more of a visual person, check out my You Tube video demonstrating how to make this sugar scrub or just watch it here!

Stay natural…stay beautiful…go green!

P.S. I used this on Saturday…my skin was like silk and I felt like I was having dessert in the shower! You will love this!

How long have you been “green” with your beauty routine?

For me, it’s been about five years. It didn’t all happen at once, but it was a gradual switch for me. One of the last conventional products I said goodbye to (with a tear in my eye) was my eyeshadow. All the pretty colors and so vivid! Have you guessed the brand? Yes, MAC. And at $15 a pop, they don’t come cheap. I thought I would never find something comparable to the beautiful colors of MAC….until I did!

Many people think this way…that they can’t give up their conventional product because there will never be a natural counterpart that works as well or looks as good. Wrong! I am here today to prove this to you. Natural and organic beauty products not only can compare with conventional but can beat them by a long shot!

If you’ve been steadily going green, but are still holding on to these last few toxic products, this post is for you! Through my journey as the “Toxic Beauty Avenger” I’ve found a wealth of amazing natural and organic products that are fabulous! I’m going to share the toxic product and the safe replacement with you today. So ladies, kick those last few toxics to the curb and check out my conversion chart below.

[As a side note, you may find that the natural product is more pricey than the conventional. This is simply because the toxic product uses cheap ingredients which will harm your body and cause disease. The natural one uses quality and safe ingredients, which cost more. I always say, pay now or pay later!]

Check out this handy chart for a quick toxic to natural conversion!

I must say I’ve only tried 1 out of the 5 brands mentioned (Yes to!- which at first I thought was a good brand but contains some unsavory ingredients!)…but their descriptions really make me want to try them all! Take a look and tell me which ones you’d like to try in the comments section.

Organic Cosmetics: The Best Worldwide

With more and more information surfacing about the amount of potentially harmful chemicals in cosmetics, many people are now opting to go green. Organic cosmetics sales have risen steeply in the last ten years and it is not surprising when you hear that common cosmetic ingredients are suspected of being carcinogenic, allergy causing and simply unhealthy for our bodies long term. Here are five organic cosmetics from around the world and why we think they are a great alternative to standard non-organic products.

Yes To…

The name is not the only eye catching thing about this range of organic products. There are shampoos, lip balms, body lotions and face creams all of which are at least 95% natural. The packaging is fun and bright with each product range based around a fruit or vegetable. There are carrot lip balms, which includes beta carotene, cucumber hair treatments and grapefruit body cream to name a few, all of which have been devised to give effective results with no parabens or nasty chemicals.

Neal’s Yard Remedies

Neal’s Yard have been producing organic and natural products for years and so have a wealth of experience up their sleeve. This body polish combines the gentlest of scrubs, made from rose seeds with high quality antioxidants and the result is a high end, effective but gentle, face scrub which doesn’t damage skin. However, the best thing about it is the price with a 100gram tube costing just £11.70. When many organic products cost upwards of £25 this is a little bargain.

Origin’s Purifying Tonic

Origins have a special range called organics which, as you can imagine, contains natural ingredients and caters for those of you who prefer using as little chemicals as possible. The range has USDA Organic certification and are all pretty reasonable when it comes to price. The purifying tonic contains willow bark, a natural exfoliant, organic lavender alcohol and is great for those that want to remove all their makeup gently and effectively.

Caudalie Anti-Aging Face Tan

Fake tan has become hugely popular over the last few years and has come a long way since the streaky tans of the 80s. If you aren’t keen on the usual high street tans which contain chemicals, this could be perfect for you. Caudalie uses natural active ingredients which give you a glowing tan and are biodegradable. There are no parabens or petrochemicals in it but this doesn’t affect your colour – you can’t get better than that!

Persian Rose are a leading Hong Kong organic cosmetics company and offer beautiful products at very reasonable prices. This organic body lotion has the subtle scent of rose and will keep your skin subtle and soft without the use of artificial emollients, parabens or any nasty chemicals which could cause damage in the long term. Available from several online retailers, it also comes wrapped in such beautiful packaging it would make a great gift for a loved one.
