The Secret to Healthy Skin, Hair, and Nails

Diatomaceous earth

The secret to healthy skin, hair, and nails lies within.

Could it really be this simple? Can this extremely affordable substance really be the key to inner and outer health? What is it?

It’s Diatomaceous Earth (or DE.)

Before we get into “deets” let me tell you how I found out about diatomaceous earth.

I adore farmer’s markets and when I found out about the local “Yellow Green” Market a few minutes from my house, I had to check it out! It was pretty awesome…selling not just fruits and veggies, but it had booths with all sorts of handmade products from pastries to cosmetics (jackpot!) I happened upon one booth in which a man was selling natural skincare and cosmetics. After we chatted for a while, I noticed a large bottle filled with a sandy looking white powder. I asked him what it was.

As soon as I asked him, his whole face lit up. He proceeded to tell me how this substance, DE, had completely turned his life around. He had been grossly overweight and sick. He began taking the DE, lost all the extra weight, and beat the illness. From what he told me, I just wanted to buy the DE right then and there…but I’m the sort of person who will find out about something, then look it up online to “verify” what I’ve heard. So I did just that. And this is what I’ve found.

What Exactly is Diatomaceous Earth?

The name gives it away…it’s made up of earth. More specifically, it’s 89% silica, a trace element (throughout the article I’ll use the terms “DE” and “silica” interchangeably.) Dr. Barbara Hendel, in her book Water and Salt says this:

“Silica is the most important trace element in human health.”

It’s composed of tiny fossilized water plants and ground into a white powder. The better quality DE should be white in color as opposed to gray. Always be sure to purchase food grade DE. Again…always be sure to purchase food grade DE. I can’t stress this enough.

diatomaceous earthDE is a miracle product because it cleanses the entire body. When you take DE regularly, it’s like going on a perpetual total body cleanse. Most of us need this because we take in toxins on a daily basis. The human body holds 7 grams of silica, more than any other mineral. Silica helps with bodily functions and aides in mineral absorption. It helps detoxify the colon…and it’s been said death begins in the colon! According to

“Diatomaceous Earth (DE) has been reported to absorb methyl mercury, E. coli, endotoxins, viruses (including poliovirus), organophosphate pesticide residues, and drug residues. DE is a natural organic colon cleanser and detoxifier.”

Here are a few more reported health benefits of DE:

[Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Osteoperosis, Weight Loss, Cosmetics, Hair, Nails, Teeth & Gums, Energy, Bacteria, Mucus, Anti-Aging, Urinary Infections, Headache]

While DE is beneficial for the entire body, when taken each day, it results in beautiful hair, skin, and nails.

What is the one nutrient which ensures young looking skin? It’s collagen. Guess what collagen is mostly made up of? Bingo! Silica. Silica deficiency in the body results in the breakdown of collagen. Silica assists in relieving skin problems such as rashes and acne. It also helps fade age spots.

Supplementing with silica far surpasses any other products for maintaining healthier and longer lasting collagen. Did that just blow your mind? Still, I wouldn’t throw out that $50 anti aging serum….you just probably won’t need to repurchase it!

How does silica help hair? Hair is made of 90% silica…and supplementing with DE promotes hair growth and strength. The same holds true for nails. If you’ve had problems with weak nails or they’re always breaking, silica is your solution. Since I’ve restarted my DE regimen, my nails have never looked more beautiful (and I always had problems with them being thin and breaking easily.)

Now, the questions are: how much to take and where do I get it from?

The general guidelines are 1-2 tablespoons a day mixed in any liquid. DE has no taste (expect maybe a bit sandy-kinda yucky, but you get used to it.) It can be added to juice, milk, or water. I prefer water. I usually add a little water and drink it like a shot, followed by more water to get the chalky taste out of my mouth. You should also do it in the morning, as an incredible energy burst is sure to follow. I then take another tablespoon in water later in the afternoon (around 3:00-4:00.) We even put it in our dog’s food since its a great flea, tick, and parasite preventative! Don’t be concerned with taking too much…the excess is eliminated through the kidneys and intestines.

Where to get it? Most health food stores do not carry it, so you must order it online. I’ve found a top quality one from More Than Alive. It’s extremely affordable at just $6.20 a pound! They also carry a 100 lb size for $100 (if you have somewhere to store it, why not get the 100lb?) They also have some great info on DE on this page, if you want to check it out.

So let’s take a hint from our European and Asian neighbors who use DE as a health and beauty aid for hair, skin, nails, bones and joints. There is nothing to lose and so much to gain. It won’t hurt to eat a little dirt. :-)

[Now it's your turn!]

Do you make DE a regular part of your daily supplementation? Do you think you will start now that you know all this? Leave me a comment below and I’ll be your best friend! And let’s spread the knowledge by sharing this post. It’s much appreciated.

Stay natural…stay beautiful…go green!

It is only now that I have heard about DE and I’m already amazed. I’d rather eat some little ‘dirt’ than to suffer several years just because I have taken improper and -take note- pricey medicines and supplements. I’d be glad to try this one. Thanks for sharing! Spread the word!

sounds like a wonderful product i will have to start doing more research on and possibly start using it in my daily supplements. Thanks for sharing this!

  • Rikki

I was so excited to see this! I used DE instead of fogging my place when I discovered my new kitten had fleas. I sprinkled it on my furniture and rug and just vacuumed it up a day later. I even sprinkled it on my kitten to kill the fleas in his fur! It works by scratching the exoskeleton of the fleas and then drying their insides out. No chemicals needed! I didn’t know about the benefits to people though. I probably have animal grade DE, but I will definitely order the food grade kind.

    Hi Rikki,

Isn’t it cool to find people of like minds? We have a BIG ant problem here and I’ve been wanting to use the DE to spread around the outside of the house but haven’t done it yet. I am so glad the DE handled the flea problem for your kitten! It also helps to repel fleas to put a little bit in your pet’s food. My dog is about 14 lbs and I put 1 teaspoon in her food twice a day- no fleas in sight! Thanks for commenting and have a great day!

Thanks, Jinella! I always say, we don’t “connect” with the earth anymore. We used to get really dirty as kids, and I even used to go barefoot up and down my street and as time went on, dirt was treated as something bad or something that spreads germs. By taking DE, not only are you getting all the health and beauty benefits, but you are also getting a bit closer to the earth, in some little way. :)

  • Emma

First time to learn about this and I’m intrigued! I’m eyeing to buy a supplement for hair, nails and skin next month and I could buy this instead (the former’s a bit pricey). Thank you so much for this! Now off to Googling…

  • Natural Organics

Fabulous, Emma! I love sharing this stuff! :)

I’m sold. When I get some extra cash I’m getting this :-)
I took Andrew Lessman’s Skin Hair and Nails. It was good for my nails but didn’t notice much of a dramatic difference anywhere else.

This does sound like an awesome product right out from earth! I am going to get some and incorporate it with my supplements. Most probably when I’m done with my supplements I wouldn’t need them, just the DE is good enough. I also want to add some to my 92 lb yellow lab’s food! :) Thanks for sharing!

I tried Andrew Lessmans ” hair skin and nails” supplements years ago and did not really notice any difference. Years before that after the birth of both my daughters I had that “hormonal” hair loss that occurs usually about 6 months after they were born. At that time there was no Internet so it was harder and took longer to research which path to take. I stumbled upon a book at a garage sale called, ” The Vitamin Bible” by Earl Mendle ( I think that’s the correct spelling ) there’s a natural regimen for whatever ails you. I followed the one for hair loss and it was there that I made the connection between hair loss and hormones. The key supplements were Choline and Inositol and some others. To this day I recommend the Twin Labs combo and I and my clients have seen great results with hair, skin and nails. As with any supplement it doesn’t happen overnight but does seem to halt the falling out and soon after, the growing back in!

Who would’ve thought that we can be healthier with ‘dirt’ right? it’s good to embrace changes sometimes.. a good, unique change. I’d love to try it! Thanks for sharing the info with us. Nice! :)

Thank you for chiming in with your experiences! So many times a supplement designed only for “hair, skin, and nails” doesn’t work worth a damn! The cool thing about the DE is that it benefits the entire body, not just cosmetically. The only challenging thing is to remember to take it every day!

  • Todra Payne

This is interesting. I’ve never heard of it. I’ll definitely give it a try. I’ve been so frustrated with my hair length lately. It seems to have simply stopped growing at an awkward in-between length.

  • Stacy

Sounds too good to be true! even so I ordered 2 lbs just to try.How long before I see a difference? Thanks

  • Natural Organics

Stacy, this is something that actually IS NOT too good to be true! If you stay consistent with taking it twice daily, you should begin to see and feel results immediately! I’m so glad you opted to go for it! :-)

  • lynn

i had to start w/ a heaping teaspoon and work my way up to 1 – 2 tablespoons a day due to the ‘trots’ (sorry). we also use it on the ground and trees to kill ants, and dust inside and around the house – killed a few spiders too.

  • Natural Organics

It’s ok, Lynn….lol…you probably had that because your body was detoxing!

  • http://toxicbeauty Stacy

Was this the exact same brand as the guy from the farmer’s market got?

  • Natural Organics

Not sure, Stacy, but basically they are all the same except how I mentioned in the article that you need to make sure the powder is white. Some of the ones which tend to be on the gray-ish scale are not as high quality. Also be sure to get food grade DE.

  • lynn

restarted at lower dose to get used to it. thank you

forgot to add i use small amounts de as a exfoliant and on my toothpaste

  • Natural Organics

Yes! I forgot to mention it can also be used as an exfoliant for your skin and as a face mask, which I have not tried yet! :-)
